Plant a one-year old vine in November and encourage one main stem to grow. It takes two to three years to reach 20ft. Pinch off and encourage side shoots to grow as you would a tomato or cucumber to leave about ten side shoots for a 20ft tall plant. Prune annually after the grapes are harvested in October. Greenhouses allow you to be flexible
with your planting - you don't have to stick rigidly to traditional seasonal varieties, but can experiment with salad vegetables, for example, bred to grow during the winter under glass.
You may opt to try your hand at exotic fruits
such as oranges, lemons, limes, melons, olives and grapes, very attractive plants and trees which will add a distinctive Mediterranean feel to a sunny, sheltered
patio.

Lettuces can be sown between September and April according to variety. Some varieties may be sown in ovember. Sow in a seed tray and they will germinate within two days.

Oranges, lemons and limes need heat - a minimum of 10?C. These fruits are more ornamental than edible and you can buy plants all year round. When the roots fill the pot, transfer to a larger one, ultimately a 10" pot which you can either stand on the floor or put in soil.

Grapes can be grown in a lean-to as they need a support to grow up. A white wall backdrop is ideal as it will reflect the sun and help to ripen the fruit. Grape vines can root outside without heat, but the fruit should be grown within the within the greenhouse or lean-to and a pane of glass can be removed as the plant gets taller and more vines are grown.

Once the seedlings have two leaves, space them out and when the roots have filled the tray transfer to a border in the greenhouse.
Bring geraniums in from your garden or patio in October and transfer back to the garden in fresh compost as soon as the danger of frost has gone.
